Background of the Study
Gendered parenting styles, characterized by differential treatment of children based on gender, have significant implications for child development and socialization. In Afikpo North Local Government Area, cultural traditions and societal expectations contribute to distinct parenting practices for boys and girls (Onyema, 2023). Recent research between 2023 and 2025 suggests that such differentiated approaches can lead to varied outcomes in academic performance, self-esteem, and future gender role adherence (Nwosu, 2024). Parents often unconsciously adopt practices that reinforce traditional gender roles, thereby influencing the aspirations and behaviors of their children (Okoro, 2025). This study aims to investigate the extent and nature of gendered parenting styles in the region, exploring how these practices affect the social and educational development of children. A comprehensive understanding of these dynamics is critical for informing interventions aimed at fostering equitable child development and challenging entrenched gender norms.
Statement of the Problem
Gendered parenting styles in Afikpo North contribute to the reinforcement of traditional gender roles, potentially limiting the development and aspirations of children (Onyema, 2023). The differential treatment based on gender has been linked to disparities in academic performance and self-esteem (Nwosu, 2024). Despite recognition of these issues, there remains a lack of comprehensive studies examining the extent and impact of these parenting practices in the region (Okoro, 2025). This study seeks to address this gap by exploring how gendered parenting influences child development and by proposing strategies to promote more balanced approaches.
Objectives of the Study:
To identify the prevalent gendered parenting styles in Afikpo North.
To assess the impact of these styles on children’s development.
To recommend balanced parenting strategies that promote gender equity.
Research Questions:
What are the dominant gendered parenting styles in Afikpo North?
How do these styles affect the academic and social development of children?
What strategies can encourage more equitable parenting practices?
Research Hypotheses:
Gendered parenting styles significantly influence child development outcomes.
Differential treatment based on gender is linked to disparities in academic performance.
Balanced parenting approaches result in more equitable development among children.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of gendered parenting styles on child development in Afikpo North. The findings will provide valuable insights for parents, educators, and policymakers, guiding the implementation of interventions aimed at promoting balanced parenting. Ultimately, the study seeks to foster an environment that supports equitable opportunities for all children, contributing to long-term social progress.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
